Located at Barrow Island, 70-kilometres off Western Australia’s Pilbara coast, the Chevron Gorgon LNG Jetty and Marine Structures Project is the largest single resource natural gas project in Australia’s history. Once completed, the Gorgon Jetty will be the longest LNG Jetty in Australia at 2.1km in length.

CADS Survey has been contracted to provide a land, marine construction, and hydrographic survey team to the Saipem Leighton Consortium, covering all requirements for the construction of this $1.85 billion project.

The complexity and sheer scale of the project is unprecedented and has created several challenges due to its location and surrounding environment. Positioning the large-scale construction in its fragile marine environment is one such challenge, for which we have developed technological solutions.

CADS Survey is providing a range of services for this project, including:

  • Supply, mobilisation, and ongoing operation of R2Sonic hydrographic multi-beam survey system
  • Bathymetric surveys for determination of progress and analysis of sub-sea earthworks
  • Generation of high quality bathymetric charts utilising Terramodel, Autocad, and Hypack softwares
  • Determination of sub-sea earthworks volumes and confirmation of as-built locations and elevations
  • Custom utilisation of Trimble® Hydropro software enabling precise, real time, “sink on location” placement of 56 caissons forming the backbone of the modular jetty
  • Networking real time total station solutions for precise placement of 23 caissons forming the Marine Heavy Lift Facility wharf face and tug pen breakwater. Caissons are being placed by heavy lift ship, hence the importance for a real time solution
  • Networking of multiple RTK GPS receivers allowing sub-sea placement of gravel beds via screed frame for caisson seating
  • Fitting of GPS equipment to barge cranes
  • Management of tug boat fleet positioning, ensuring accurate placement of anchors in an area where avoidance of sea-bed features both natural and man-made is crucial
  • Wireless networking of all fleet vessels enabling vessel interaction to be easily viewed through Hydropro software
  • Establishment of high accuracy control network
  • Survey support for all concrete works such as jetty abutment and Heavy Lift Facility deck
  • High precision pre-survey and setout for guidance of road and pipe modules in accordance with design position and tolerances
